SPIRAL ARTWORKS
Summarize what you did in this activity/project:
In this activity I created 5 variations of one form or pattern of art, which is spiral works. Each artwork had its own unique qualities, that is, differing colors, textures, strokes, shapes, etc, however each one in some form did turn into a spiral. I explored four color gradients, blue, red, purple, and black. Some I painted on canvases, some on a square moleskin sketchbook, and others on either A3 sized sketchbooks or on curved cutouts. This proved to me as a free flowing yet constrictive art style, I could form the spirals however I wanted, however I had to maintain a particular amount of fluidity with the strokes and not overdo it. This art style was heavily inspired by a very under rated artist, Jackie Liu, who also made variations of art pieces containing different conceptual meanings.
Explain what you hoped to accomplish through this activity/project?
For this project, I hoped to achieve my own art style, and become better at one set form of art rather than being mediocre across all art forms. In the future I want to be able to create more gradients spirals in more forms and colors and even explore different textures, incorporating things such as anchor thread, wire, etc. all malleable materials.
How successful were you in achieving your goals? What difficulties did you encounter and how did you overcome them?
I believe I was successful, over the course of making these artworks, I improved incredibly at incorporating the colors better, blending them in, and even the way I formed the spirals themselves. It helped me get a better view at the best ways I can use different colors and strokes to make the best possible piece I can. However I did face many difficulties in the process. The first time I tried it out, I had completely detoured and didn’t focus on the main aspect of the painting itself, instead I gave more attention to the way I should’ve blended the colors. I also often gave myself a hard time making these pieces. Being a perfectionist, I couldn’t get myself to overlook the slightest mistakes, which caused me a lot of problems especially since the main way to go about painting these artworks was to explore free flowing natures. There really was no set way to overcome this problem, the only way I got myself to overlook the mistakes was to just ask my friends for their opinions on the piece, and prioritize their own opinions over mine, this helped me reduce the amount of time I spent dwelling on whether my art piece was good and spend more time actually making it.
How can you apply what you have learned in other life
situations?
I can apply this to my own art works. This new form of style that I learnt can help me enhance my own art works even more and help me create even more impactful meanings. This can also help me avoid trying to make each every single detail perfect with no mistakes, in the long run this will benefit me a lot, as I will be able to stop dwelling on each and every single thing for a long period of time.
